As the weather gets warmer, more and more people around Louisiana will be heading outdoors for some fun. Many of those people ride motorcycles as a way to relax and enjoy themselves while some will use them for basic transportation needs. What all of them likely know is that they may be at an increased risk of being involved in a serious crash. Motorcycle accidents are more likely to result in more serious injuries or fatality than those between regular passenger vehicles. A recent fatal crash between a motorcycle and a pickup truck shows just how a carefree ride can turn dangerous.

The crash happened on a recent early morning on a state highway near an intersection. Police say that a man was driving east on his motorcycle while the truck was headed west on the same roadway. The truck driver allegedly tried to cross the highway and the motorcyclist struck the truck on the right side.

Despite wearing a helmet, the man on the motorcycle died at the scene of the crash. Law enforcement says they think that speed may have contributed to the crash, but they are also awaiting results of toxicology tests before making final determinations. They have not announced plans to file criminal charges yet and say their investigation remains open at this time.

If the driver of the truck is found to be at fault for the crash, he or she may not just face criminal charges, but a civil claim as well. The family of the motorcyclist could decide to file a wrongful death claim against the truck driver. Doing so could result in monetary compensation that could help the family cover any expenses related to the incident. A Louisiana attorney who specializes in personal injury cases with extensive knowledge in handling litigation related to motorcycle accidents may be a grieving family’s best resource.
