Have you ever noticed the way a semitruck trailer sits high off the ground? In fact, the trailer is positioned perfectly so that the bottom half of the average motor vehicle would slip right under it while sheering off the top half of the car. This poses a serious threat to any car that inadvertently T-bones a semitruck.
Imagine if you were traveling in a vehicle and a semitruck pulled out in front of your path. Suddenly, your vehicle would be trapped under the trailer of the semitruck and you and your passengers could be decapitated as a result.
Rear underride guard laws are already in place
It’s precisely these dangers that resulted in the passage of laws mandating rear underride guards on big rigs — which have not been updated since 1998. You’ve probably seen these rear guards as you’re following semitrucks on the road. Rear underride guards prevent motorists from crashing into the back of a semitruck and sliding underneath. Now it’s time for side underride guards to become mandatory as well.
Side undercarriage guard technology is available
Technology already exists to prevent the majority of side-crash deaths related to semitrucks and motor vehicles. Nevertheless, the proposed legislation required to make this technology mandatory on all semitrucks has yet to become law. One proposed bill, the Stop Underrides Act of 2017, is still being reviewed by the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.
According to one of the senators who helped introduce the bill, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, “With so many unpredictable accidents on the road, underride guards are an easy solution for protecting people and preventing them from dying when a car collides with a truck.”
Isn’t it time for politicians to act as quickly as possible to make this potentially life-saving measure a reality for American drivers?
